The World Cup Final proved a superb finale to the most successful crowd event in The Academy Shopping Centre’s history.
Every available space in and around the centre’s courtyard was filled to capacity as Spain defeat Holland to be crowned World Champions. Even the photographer had difficulty climbing the stairs to get to the roof!

Centre Manager John Macfarlane said, “I couldn’t believe the number of people who came to watch the final! It was a lovely sunny evening and the atmosphere was superb. The courtyard was packed, the pubs were packed, and the crowd was jubilant! Everywhere I went people just wanted to have their photo taken and soak in the atmosphere.” “Customer loyalty at the centre has always been strong, and many of those in the crowd were regulars, I kept hearing “this is great, The Academy is back on the map!” Trading levels have been exceptional throughout the five weeks of the World Cup, and on three occasions one of the three bar restaurants reported record takings. Footfall has been up on last year by as much as 70%, and public feedback has been very positive towards the promotion, customers were especially appreciative of how well the centre prepared and decorated the courtyard for the event. Recent text messages to the centre’s messaging system talked of the centre ‘never having looked better!’ The Big Screen will remain in the courtyard for the summer as the courtyard is re-decorated for the centre’s next promotion, ‘My Kind of Brands’, and the newest tenant, Baskin Robbins, takes seating space for the rest of the summer.
